Who needs three kinds of potatoes? Not me, I need four. You can't see the giant white ones that are on top of my refrigerator. You also can't see: seven (SEVEN) baskets of golden raspberries that we got on Friday and yesterday, three baskets of strawberries, all the halibut, the eggs, most of the basil, the baby carrots (three bunches), the lemon cucumbers, two eggplants, more Romano beans, yellow wax beans, three pounds of Tongue of Fire shelling beans, or several kinds of heirloom tomatoes--all of those things have been eaten in the past few days (four of the baskets of golden raspberries went into Logan, three before we got home from the market). The rest is what came from the farmers market on Sunday and Tuesday.
For the record, there are: golden zucchini, Zephyr squash (the yellow ones with the green tips), poblano peppers, basil, Early Girl tomatoes, Russian fingerling potatoes, Romano beans, Sun Gold cherry tomatoes, Hass avocados, yellow creamers, Yukon gold potatoes, Walla Walla onions, and cipollini onions.
Farms and suppliers supported this week: Live Earth, Dirty Girl, Everett, Van Dyke Ranch, Route One, Happy Boy, H & H Fresh Fish, Meder Street Farms, and the UCSC Farm & Garden Project.
At right is the selection of Early Girl tomatoes at Dirty Girl's booth on Tuesday—you can see why I bought a big bowlful. (Oven-Roasted Tomatoes, here I come.) Joe Schirmer, who has been called "handsome" a time or three thousand in his life, prefers to be called "Pretty Dirty Girl" or just plain "Pretty Girl." Just ask him. Next time I'll make him give me a pose without the sunglasses.
I was so enamored of the corn dish I made on Sunday that I did
something similar on Monday night with yellow wax beans, frozen corn,
basil, tomatoes, and eggplant. I had leftovers, so last night I made a
kind of lasagne using Betty Van Dyke's yellow squash (the deep yellow,
pictured above) instead of noodle. I layered that with the leftover
bean mix, added some roasted green chile salsa verde, and roasted it
until it was softer. Then I added a bunch of grated Monterey Jack, and
I mashed some potatoes. I put the veggie casserole on top of the
potatoes, and that was a fine dinner last night.
I AM SO EXCITED! Guillermo and Megan made it to visit the wonderful Coleman Family Farm in Carpinteria. And Tracey and Carole of Edible Ojai (and Edible Communities)! Wait, I'm jealous, not excited. Go check out their Bike2Barn blog.
Geoff Palla was at the Friday market for the last time, and now he's permanently in Napa. Best of luck to a wonderful and inspiring man with a generous nature and a great sense of humor. Copia is fortunate to have him. I feel blessed to have crossed paths with him.
Thanks for visiting, y'all. More soon. (That zucchini at left is glowing with health; it's at the Live Earth Farm booth yesterday.)
